Ornithological survey – what is it?
Ornithological survey serves the purpose of protecting birds living in the investment area. It is thanks to this document that we are able to determine which species inhabit the nearby trees or bushes that are going to be felled. Some birds may also live in the buildings selected for thermomodernization. Ornithological survey is prepared by a qualified ornithologist. The documentation is necessary to obtain a permit from the Regional Directorate for Environmental Protection. Because of that, we are able to avoid the destruction of bird nesting sites during construction works.
Ornithological and chiropterological survey
In addition to a standard ornithological survey, our customers also sometimes request us to prepare a chiropterological survey. The difference is that it focuses entirely on flying mammals, namely bats. These creatures used to mainly inhabit caves and tree hollows. However, some species have been synanthropized and live in the vicinity of humans. They particularly like nooks and crannies under the roof and the windowsills, lofts or attics. To ensure that the animals won’t be harmed in any way, a chiropterological survey should be commissioned. In order to do that, a chiropterologist should be consulted. The expert shall use appropriate testing techniques, thanks to which everything is carried out without undue interference.
How much does an ornithological survey cost?
We often get questions about the price of an ornithological survey. It is difficult to clearly determine the fixed cost of preparing a sound ornithological survey. The price depends on the type of the investment. The main factor affecting the cost of preparing an ornithological survey is the size of the site and the time that the ornithologist needs to perform a thorough analysis of the site. In general, the cost of such a service is about several hundred PLN. The price can increase if the site is large.
When is ornithological survey required? – legal basis
Ornithological and chiropterological survey is essential. We want to avoid the destruction of habitats of different species of birds during the construction period. Appendix no. 1 to the Regulation of the Minister of Environment of 16 December 2016 concerning the animal species protection states that birds and bats that inhabit urban areas are subject to strict species protection. Interestingly, according to research, most housing buildings are inhabited by birds and bats. It is therefore our duty to prepare an ornithological survey before the beginning of the repair works.

When preparing for the reconstruction of a building (thermal modernization or facade change), we often do not realize that the building is inhabited by various creatures. Bird habitats are often not visible at first glance. They are located in crevices as well as in flat roofs. That is why it’s so important to prepare an ornithological survey that will clearly identify the species that are nesting in the building.
Tree felling
Each tree and shrub felling carries a risk of environmental damage. It concerns birds’ habitats, the eggs in them, as well as chicks and adult animals. It should be remembered that during the nesting season, tree and shrub felling is only possible under the supervision of an ornithologist.To avoid problems with planning your work, contact an experienced ornithologist. They will be able to assess the investment opportunities from an environmental risk point of view. They shall also prepare appropriate documentation, which will allow you to perform the tree and shrub felling in accordance with the law.
Road reconstruction
Road reconstruction sometimes requires the felling of nearby trees or bushes. If someone is afraid of the investment being suspended due to failure to meet all the requirements listed in regulations, they should commission a professional ornithological survey.
Photovoltaics
An ornithological survey will also be necessary when installing photovoltaic panels or solar collectors within buildings. Ornithological or chiropterological survey is especially necessary when the project is implemented through EU funding. An ornithologist’s survey is also required for investments involving the construction of photovoltaic farms.

Here are the dates which we recommend for preparing an ornithological survey:
- from September 1 to March 31 – spring before the renovation of the building;
- from April 1 to October 15 – in spring, one year before modernization.
Conducting construction works according to the schedule
The work schedule will allow having full control over the investment. At the same time, it allows preventing downtime in construction works. As the ornithological survey should be prepared early enough, before the renovation begins, the period from April 1 to October 15 is the best time to prepare the above-mentioned ornithological survey.
The verifying authorities, such as the Regional Directorate for Environmental Protection, will indicate all errors and omissions in the prepared documentation. The consequence of this is the documents being returned. The necessary clarifications should then be provided and, if necessary, corrections made.
