Ichthyologist – who is it?

Ichthyologists study all aspects of fish and lampreys biology including anatomy, behavior and environment. He is a highly qualified specialist in the observation and study of fish. The ichthyologist has knowledge of the anatomy, ecology and habitat of underwater creatures. This knowledge allows him to efficiently identify the different species occurring in Poland. Due to the specificity of the environment (standing and flowing waters), specialized equipment is required to perform the fish inventory. These include nets and generators that temporarily stun fish in a small area. This allows the ichthyologist to collect relevant data necessary for the inventory and valorisation of the area.

What does an ichthyologist do?

An ichthyologist is indispensable for comprehensive ecological surveys and for investments directly related to water, e.g. land reclamation, flood protection works and the construction of bridges. For these projects, our specialist often provides environmental supervision.
